The Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado is paramount to the existence and advancement of building in our community. Through our Advocacy efforts, Community Investment Program, and the HBASC Trades N Training Program we are shaping the community where we live, work and play.

2017 Highlights

Advocacy

HBASC's legislative coalition works vigorously on the industry's behalf monitoring local government meetings and the adoption of updated building and land use codes. Think of us as your Legislative Watchdog.

Our advocacy extends to the state and national levels through the Colorado Association of Home Builders and the National Association of Home Builders. All three organizations strive to protect the American dream of housing opportunities for all while working to achieve professional success for our members.

Our membership includes builders, contractors, remodelers, developers, sales and marketing experts, and a wide variety of other industry associates. We pass on industry information important to your business. We are building alliances with local government on your behalf.

 Trades N Training Program

The Trades N Training program offers students the opportunity to gain experience and certification in a variety of construction related trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.  This program will not only assist our industry in providing a skilled workforce, but we will also be providing our youth career opportunities that they may not otherwise have access to.

Founded in September 2017, this program is being piloted in Durango and Bayfield High Schools.

Building for the Future Scholarship

The HBASC, in the last two years, has donated $10,000 to the Building for the Future Scholarship  program.  These scholarships support students graduating from local High Schools, desiring post-secondary education in any aspect of the construction industry.  The receipients will demonstrate a good work ethic, strong interest in pursuing a career in building construction or design, and willingness to learn.

The scholarship funding is made possible by ticket sales from the Parade of Homes.

Southwest Safehouse & Durango Community Shelter Projects

37 skilled volunteers came together for two days in December 2016 to help with basic maintenance and renovations. Every single room was painted, all necessary roof repairs were made (including the installation of new gutters) new closet doors were installed, along with new toilets and shelves to replace the filing cabinet that had been serving as the linen closet.
The HBASC convened for an additional week of work in April 2017 to complete the more major structural repairs.  By the time the week was over, the HBASC had answered the call for assistance with 19 business & 15 independent volunteers contributing over 33 hours of labor, plus significant materials & installation costs.
Renovations of the Durango Community Shelter have been funded and work will commence early in 2018.
