But how do you invest your kitchen remodel dollars to get the best return? Here are some smooth moves from veteran Southwest Colorado kitchen remodelers:
- Don’t change the layout. Leave doors, windows, and appliance locations in place if at all possible. Enlarging an internal doorway or an island might be do-able without breaking the bank, but nothing chews through a budget like moving plumbing and electrical lines and relocating windows.
- Start with plain cabinets. Talk with your remodeler about the possibility of using basic cabinets—perhaps from a big box store—and finishing them with custom or semi-custom doors. Or even using your current cabinet bases and investing in new doors.
- Spend a little extra on hardware. It makes sense to dedicate a portion of your remodeling money to things you see and touch multiple times each day, like door handles and faucets.
If all roads seem to lead to the kitchen, remodeling may give you the opportunity to enhance the room’s role in the family. You could find a spot for a pull-down (or up) surface to serve as a daytime office or school desk. Or install open shelving on one end of your island so young kids can make themselves breakfast or a snack.
